|Epilepsy story update|
My name is Van Tuan Chau. I remembered I had my first seizure when I was 4 years old in vietnam. From then on, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. Since then, I was taking a Japanese medicine call Dilantin.
I was the oldest son in my family with 3 siblings. I had 2 sisters and 1 brother with me being the elderly son. Then 2 years later, we came to san francisco and settled down.
I guessed one of the reason my family came to san francisco was because I have epilepsy. San Francisco is a place that is more suitable to have epilepsy. There are more updated hospitals and facilities and more anti-epileptic drugs was available.
To make a long story short, we used a few years to settled down. I, first, began in elementary school in the 3rd grade. I remembered my first teacher was Mrs. Richie. Being a kid with epilepsy was not easy having low self-esteem and going through life as a normal person which I seem not to be. I finally graduated from elementary school and went to middle school. Spending 3 years through middle school was tough having epilepsy and llimitations on myself of what I can and cannot do. I finally graduated from middle school eventually. After middle school, I went on to spend 4 years in high school and graduated in the year 1992 which I still have kept my yearbook. Also, it was sad to mention that I did not go to prom in high school because my epilepsy kept me from going out late at night. In addition, I graduated from san francisco state university (sfsu) with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in year 2000 after spending 3 years in city college of san francisco (ccsf). But those accomplishments didn't have any real benefits with me having epilepsy.
Recently, I have not much experience in life eventhough I graduated from college. That was the educational background of myself.
To move back a little bit, when I first came to san francisco, I was confirmed to have epilepsy with partial complex seizures. According to my neurologist or epileptologist, my epilepsy was due to a condition call cortical dyslesia from my childbirth.
But, even though my seizures was not serious, I still cannot do a lot of things in life, not even drive. But because not everybody was clear on what epilepsy is, so I was not accepted by others because of what I don't have.
Being disappointed with the side-effects of my anti-epileptic drugs, surgeries seem to be an option for me. With the ups and downs of my seizures, brain surgeries took place approximately in the year 2005. After surgery, with half of the bad tissue taken out, I still have seizures, but this time was rare and I had no more warnings or auras beforehand of when my next seizures is going to take place. In between the period of my surgeries and when I first came to san francisco, I have tried a lot of epilepsy treatments. I once had tried vagus nerve stimulator (vns). But that doesn't seem to work. After my vns, 2 additional surgeries took place (in and out). But that ruled out vns. So my last option was to go ahead with brain surgery. After my 4 surgeries related to epilepsy, I seem to recover a little bit. But after a while, I still have 1-2 seizures a month. So after a few more years, I finally have improvements on my health. I think that was because I am a christian and GOD was on my side and with all the medical treatments I have been receiving.
One day, I ran into a person who is an acupuncturist and recommended me to give acupuncture a try. But this time, without using electricity, advised by my neurologists or epileptoligists. When I first came to san francisco, I have tried acupuncture before. But somehow, it did not work for the moment. But that was before all my 7 surgeries. Two brain surgeries. One is to check if I am suitable for brain surgery and the other is the real surgery itself. Two vagus nerve stimulator (vns) (in and out) surgeries, 1 back surgery and two colonoscopy. Some people think that colonoscopy is not a surgery but I think it is thinking all the pain I have to endure with no need of anesthesia.
Being unemployed, with a lot of struggles and obstacles in life with low self-esteem and low confidence, which makes me hard to go through life alone and with my 4 epilepsy related surgeries, I just hope acupuncture along with acupressure and other treatments will be a miracle for me. Also, it was unusual for a person like me to be 900 degree in each eye. I might need lasik surgery in a few years.
My parents have similar health issues compare to myself. My father had issues dealing with stroke. My mom have diabetes. My younger brother have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Thanks for reading. GOD bless. Amen.
